Coronation Street’s fans in furious LGBT backlash at soap for killing Rana Habeeb
Many fans shamed the ITV for killing of a popular LGBTQ+ on her wedding day
CORRIE fans have accused the soap of playing into mistreatment of LGBTQ+ characters by killing off Rana Habeeb in the Underworld roof collapse drama.
Viewers were left heartbroken as Rana passed away in her wife Kate’s arms tonight but many were outraged and slammed the long-running soap for not showing what would have been the show’s first gay marriage.
The ITV soap had warned that a beloved character would die in the aftermath of the Underworld roof collapse.
Taking to social media after the tear-jerking episode, fans accused ITV bosses of being party to soapland’s Bury Your Gays trope by killing off Rana.
The long-derided theme, which is particularly in prevelant in TV, prevents LGBTQ+ couples from having a happy ending and never last long-term.
Such examples cited is the murder of Tara in Buffy the Vampire Slayer or killing Lexa in The 100.
As Rana teetered between life and death she and her fiance Kate managed to exchange wedding vows with Kate in the rubble but in the end, she tragically passed away.
For some Corrie viewers, tearing Rana away from Kate in such brutal fashion is a prime example of Bury Your Gays:

Bhavna Limbachia, who plays Rana, has a different take on the matter and revealed she asked to be killed off by the soap.
"When I told Kate Oates and Iain McLeod that I wanted to leave the show to try other things, it was my decision and my choice for Rana to die because it was the only fitting end to the character," she explained.
"Kate and Rana had fought so hard to be together and they had been through thick and thin together.
"I believe their love was so pure as two souls that there was no way that Rana was just going to have a change of heart, hop in a cab and leave.
"I felt that if they were to be separated, they had to be torn apart and it couldn’t have been their decision. The only way to go was if Rana were to die. Rana would never leave Kate, ever."
