Piers Morgan blasts women who are put off joining the fire service because of ‘sexist’ cartoon Fireman Sam

PIERS Morgan has blasted women who refuse to join the London fire Brigade because they are offended by cartoons, including Fireman Sam.

The GMB presenter addressed the problems the fire service are having in recruiting women - but refused to believe the common use of the gender-specific term 'fireman' is putting off women.

The 53-year-old said: "First of all male firefighters, female firefighters fantastic people, saving lives.

"Apparently they are having problems recruiting women to the fire service, apparently numbers are a bit low. Now they have isolated what the problem is.

"It’s not that women don’t want to go and risk their lives, but actually, it's cartoons. It's Fireman Sam, that is the problem, because it is called Fireman Sam.

"Even though there are female firefighters in Fireman Sam, including Penny, who is a fully fledged female firefighter.

"But not just Fireman Sam, Peppa Pig is also embroiled in the scandal. It’s been accused of sexism because it called 'fireman'."

Piers went on to address people working in the delivery service, and insisted the name, outfit, the rhyme, will also cause controversy.

He continued: "Postman Pat - he can't be a postman anymore. What is he a postperson? Postperson Patricia.

"And you can’t have a black and white cat because that’s racist. So, he’ll have to have a blue cat. But can he be blue because that will be Conservative? Therefore, it becomes politically polarising. Green cat is environmentally friendly, which will upset anyone who is not environmentally friendly."

Co-host Susanna Reid added: "It might make him vegan. So it is almost impossible now for any cartoon character to exist."

Piers went on to hit out at the London Fire Brigade for their "ridiculously politically correct" statements on their site and social media.

He fumed: "Here’s my message London Fire Brigade... why don’t you go and put out fires. I’m losing people behind the London’s Fire Brigade official statements and Twitter account, which are ridiculously politically correct."

But Susanna was not happy with the remark. She jumped in: "They do put out fires. Don’t lose the fire brigade in your rant here."

GMB viewers have hit out at Piers and insisted women today know they can secure a position in the fire brigade, if they chose.

One tweeted: "OMG get a grip UK! Any intelligent woman/man understands in this day and age woman can join the Fire Service. Leave children to enjoy children's TV and we did!!!."

Another wrote: "Girls of 15 and younger know they can be anything they want to be nowadays.. ask some most won't want to be a Fire person! #gmb."
