FILM fans were left confused when Olivia Colman referred to Emma Stone as "Emily" when she accepted her Best Actress Oscar at last night's awards.

The actress, 45, had the audience in her palm of her hand as she delivered a funny but heartwarming speech and thanked her The Favourite co-stars Rachel Weisz and Emma, or rather "Emily";, for being the "loveliest".

Taken back by the win, she gushed over her fellow actresses: "Emily and Rachel, the two loveliest women in the world to fall in love with and to go to work with everyday.

"You can imagine, it wasn't a hardship."

Although many believed it to be a slip-up, the National Treasure was far from wrong as fellow Oscar winner Emma's name is actually Emily.

Despite that fact, fans took to Twitter in their droves to weigh-in on what they believed to be a Freudian slip.

One fan wrote: "Olivia called #EmmaStone Emily, which she can do because she just won #BestActress. #Oscars2019".

"And her calling Emma Stone 'Emily' as she looked on crying is a real MOOD," another wrote.

A third penned: "Olivia Colman called Emma Stone "Emily"which is so on brand it hurts

"Can we all start calling Emma Stone "Emily" now? I think we're close enough," a fan shared.

Speaking about her name change in 2017, Emma told that a contestant on Australia's Next Top Model had registered "Emily Stone" with the Screen Actors Guild, leaving her to pick another moniker.

She said: "My real name is Emily Stone, but when I started acting, that name was already taken by another actress, so I had to come up with a different one.

"For a 16-year-old, picking a new name is an interesting prospect, and back then I said, 'I’m now going to be Riley Stone!' So, for about six months I was called Riley.

"I landed a guest spot on Malcolm in the Middle, and one day they were calling, 'Riley! Riley! Riley! We need you on set, Riley!' and I had no idea who they were talking to.

"At that moment, I realised that I just couldn't be Riley. So I became Emma. But I miss Emily. I would love to get her back."

Previously, she joked on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that Emma Bunton inspired her stage name.

She said: "Growing up, I was super blonde, and my real name is Emily, but I wanted to be called Emma because of Baby Spice and guess what? Now I am."

"It wasn’t necessarily because of her but yes, in second grade, did I go up to the teacher on the first day and ask her to call me Emma? Yes I did.

"And was it because of Emma Lee Bunton from the Spice Girls? Yes it was."
