In an interview to promote his latest film he revealed that, after he was told the attacker was black, he stalked the streets with a cosh hoping a black person "would come out of a pub and have a go at me about something".

The actor admitted in the shocking revelation this was "so I could kill him".

His comments sparked outrage with the actor branded racist by fans in an online backlash, with Piers saying today: "It’s like Ku Klux Klan stuff.

"I don't want to see this guy's movie's right now quite frankly. I mean, does anyone? It's so indiscriminate, so racist."

Liam said during the interview with the  "She handled the situation of the rape in the most extraordinary way.

"But my immediate reaction was I asked, did she know who it was? No.

"What colour were they? She said it was a black person.

"I went up and down areas with a cosh, hoping I’d be… approached by somebody.

"I’m ashamed to say that, and I did it for maybe a week – hoping some [Neeson gestures air quotes with his fingers] ‘black b******’ would come out of a pub and have a go at me about something, you know? So that I could kill him."

After listening to the audio from the interview, Piers, 53, said: "I've met him a few times, he's a very good guy to interview, very intelligent, so you can't blame stupidity for this.

"When you hear it coming from his own mouth, it's one of the most extraordinary interviews I've think I've ever heard in my entire life.

"There seems to be no self awareness in Neeson about how offensive what he's saying is.

"He knows what he's saying, it's not an accident, he's deliberately putting it out there.

"It's the indiscriminate nature of what he's saying."

Piers then said he believed it would be hard for the Taken actor to come back from his comments.

He added: "The reaction on Twitter was very extreme last night but people were saying it's a career-ending interview.

"You don't want it to be of someone of his stature, but when you actually hear him say this stuff, there will be genuine, fully justified outrage."

One furious reader tweeted: "Wow so Liam Neeson is f*****g cancelled. So if the guy was white you'd go stalking the streets to find a random, unrelated white person to kill? Scumbag."

Another added: "That Liam Neeson interview is just so saddening (and yes, still racist). It reinforces the idea that people of colour, and especially black men, are collectively responsible for the misdeeds of one.

"And that when a woman is sexually violated, it's a man who is left truly wounded."

The actor shared the story as he promoted his new film Cold Pursuit, which sees his character Nels Coxman go on a journey to kill.

The film follows the snowplough driver seeking revenge against the drug dealers he thinks killed his son.

Neeson said his behaviour was "awful" and it took him more than a week to calm down.

Later in the show, after interviewing the journalist who had got the story from Liam, Piers spoke to his colleague Andi Peters to gauge his reaction to Liam's words.

Andi, 48, didn't mince his words, telling the presenter: "For him to say what he said...and for me it really is when he says 'What colour?' because actually Liam what you should be worried about is the person that attacked your friend.

"For his instinct to be what colour that's what I find really offensive.

"I was devastated and I think it should be career-ending as you just can't say things like that, it's completely unacceptable."
