PETER Kay's fans rejoiced tonight as the comedian scooped a National Television Award.

The Bolton comedian - who did not attend the ceremony - won the Best Comedy prize for the final series of his BBC sitcom Car Share.

His co-star Sian Gibson went up on stage to collect the award on the team's behalf.

She said: "It's amazing to get our third award for Car Share, for the final so we won't be here again.

"I'm just buzzing for Westlife. Thank you Peter, who isn't here tonight. I'll bring it round tomorrow."

Backstage Sian joked: "“He’ll be watching at home, comfy with a cup of tea. I said I’d bring it round, but I might not..."

The show has come to an end but won the best comedy prizeViewers were thrilled the sitcom won the award for its final ever series after Kay opted to end the show on a high.

It is the third National Television Award comedy award the sitcom has won, and will be the final one after Peter decided to end the series.

The comedian withdrew from public life last year and cancelled his planned UK tour over "a private family matter".
