Great British Bake Off champ Sophie Faldo to swap the kitchen for frontline Army role in Afghanistan after cook book plans hit the skids
SHE’S survived the heat of the Bake Off tent and served on the front line in Afghanistan – and 2017 winner Sophie Faldo knows which one she’d rather face.
The champion has revealed she is heading back to the Army after plans for her first cookery book hit the skids.
Sophie, who served in Helmand Province in 2009 and 2010 as a captain in the Royal Artillery, has applied to resume the role she left in 2015.
Sophie said: “It is similar to the job that I have done in the past and it involves dealing with different kinds of artillery.
“I know it sounds really mad but actually I don’t like not going on tour.
“Now I want to go out on tour again and the job that I want to go into is quite frontline and back in Afghanistan, so I hope that I will get it.”
I revealed last month how Sophie has scrapped her first cookery book after splitting with her management.
She won Bake Off in its first year on Channel 4 — the year judge Prue Leith accidentally tweeted the result 12 hours before the final episode screened.
At least the catering in Sophie’s new barracks will be up to scratch.

Jack Fincham’s going to need to put in the extra hours in the gym if he wants to stand out on ITV’s The Real Full Monty.
I can reveal rippling Emmerdale hunk Kelvin Fletcher has signed up for the show.
Kelvin is the second star to get on board after I revealed Love Island’s Jack had hired a personal trainer to get him into shape for the series.
Meanwhile, its female counterpart The Real Full Monty: Ladies’ Night has snapped up Benidorm’s Crissy Rock for this series alongside Love Island’s Megan Barton Hanson.
A source said: “Bosses have chosen a very eclectic mix of stars.”
