AMERICAN actress Carol Burnett has been bestowed the highest honour at the Golden Globes by having an award named after her.

But what is she famous for? And why was there a gong created in her honour?

Who is Carol Burnett?

Carol, 85, was born April 26, 1933, and is an American actress, comedian, singer and writer, whose career spans seven decades of television.

She is best known for her groundbreaking television variety show, The Carol Burnett Show, which aired on CBS in the 60s and 70s.

The show was the first of its kind to be hosted by a woman.

Carol has achieved success on stage, television and film in varying genres including dramatic and comedic roles.

She famously played Miss Hannigan in the musical Annie in 1982.

Why did the Golden Globes name an award after Carol Burnett?

On Januray 12, 2019, Carol was presented with the first-ever Golden Globe recognising a lifetime career in television, an award that was named after her.

The Carol Burnett award, to be presented every year, was established to celebrate the new golden age of television marked by high profile shows attracting Oscar-winning actors and directors.

When accepting the award she said: “Sometimes I catch myself daydreaming about being young again and doing it all over.

“And then I bring myself up short when I realise how incredibly fortunate I was to be there at the right time.”

She dedicated her award “to all those who made my dreams come true and to all those out there who share the love I have for television.”
