The Greatest Dancer branded a flop after just 14minutes of dancing feature in 70minute show

BBC1’s new talent show The Greatest Dancer has been branded a flop — after featuring just 14 minutes of dancing in a 70-minute run time.

The show lost out to ITV’s The Voice in the intense Saturday night ratings war as the two contests went head-to-head at 8pm.

The first act did not start dancing until nine minutes into the show — but left judge Cheryl Tweedy open-mouthed at a half-naked dancer.

And some viewers were confused by the format, which featured a receptionist similar to E4’s Celebs Go Dating.

Jess Adams tweeted: “15 minutes into the programme and there’s been approximately one minute of dancing. This is so stupid.”

Lyn Dorant added: “Is this a dance contest or a chat show with a receptionist? Awful. More dancing, less chat.”

The Greatest Dancer — masterminded by Simon Cowell and also featuring Strictly pro Oti Mabuse and Glee’s Matthew Morrison — kicked off with 4.9million viewers, and ended with 5.18million, still less than its ITV rival The Voice's peak of 5.5million.

A source said: “Producers were quietly confident about The Greatest Dancer but this has been quite a big blow.

“They thought people would enjoy the back stories but many picked up on the lack of actual dancing instead.”
