CORONATION Street fans were shocked tonight as Lewis Archer was found dead by a devastated Audrey Roberts.
The smooth talking conman failed to show for a 7pm dinner date with Audrey at the Bistro prompting the salon owner to head to his home accompanied by daughter Gail.
Earlier in the episode he'd complained of stress and shoulder pain, which he blamed on Gail constantly waiting for him to slip up and hurt Audrey.
It turns out Lewis was planning to surprise Audrey with an elaborate proposal and wasn't having an affair after all.
Stunned fans wrote on Twitter: "Lewis, farewell to the smoothest of the smooth. #Corrie.
"Oh Audrey 😪 #Corrie although rather glad Gail was wrong.
"Twenty years to the day since Alfie died, not a good date for Audrey Roberts #corrie.
"omg he’s dead #corrie.
"Oh no! They can't kill him off 😥😯😢 Poor Audrey #Corrie."
Just last night Lewis appeared to threaten Gail after revealing he had big plans.
Those plans turned out to be a big proposal.
Gail tried to comfort her mum as she lay weeping over Lewis's body, but Audrey told her to leave, asking for space.
Lewis first appeared in Coronation Street in 2009.
He initially had an on-off relationship with Audrey but broke her hear after stealing from Barlow's Bookies and fleeing the country.
However, he returned in 2012, and reunited with Audrey after paying back the money he stole and claiming to be a changed man.
They split up, partly due to pressure from Gail and barmaid Gloria Price who didn't approve of their relationship.
Gail then began a secret affair with Lewis after he promised her they'd move to Italy to start a new life.
But instead he duped her, stealing £40,000 from her bank account and doing a runner once again.
