SHOWBIZ haunt The Ivy has banned guests from wearing paper hats from Christmas crackers.
Bosses at the restaurant, a favourite with A-listers, sent a waiter to tell pals enjoying a festive dinner to take off their fun headgear.
The waiter had to explain it was a “management decision”.
An onlooker said: “It was absolutely ridiculous. They brought their own crackers and didn’t think for one minute they’d be told off for wearing the hats.
“The waiter was slightly embarrassed ordering the diners to take them off as he knew he’d come across as a bit of a Scrooge.”
The Ivy, in the West End of London, is a haunt of stars such as David Beckham, 43, Emma Thompson, 59, and Brad Pitt, 55.
Its paper hat ban comes as the Covent Garden hangout is flogging its own luxury crackers at £50 for a box of six.
On its website, the restaurant says its dress code is smart casual but asks guests “to be respectful of the fact that many diners will be dressed for a celebration”.
The Ivy opened in London in 1917 and has more than 30 branches across Britain.
