Why is Debbie Dingle going on trial in Emmerdale?

Debbie Dingle was arrested in October 2018 for arranging the acid attack that saw Ross Barton scarred for life.

Fans of the ITV soap know that Debbie – played by Charley Webb – paid local drug dealer Simon McManus to ‘wipe the smile’ off of Joe Tate’s face after he conned her into believing he was called Tom Waterhouse and had fallen in love with her.

Joe was actually scheming to ruin Debbie in revenge for her mum Charity Dingle killing his dad, Chris Tate – which she didn’t actually do.

But in a tragic case of mistaken identity, it was Ross who bore the brunt of the attack after stealing one of Joe’s cars.

And, while Debbie just wanted Simon to rough Joe up a bit, the dealer took it a step too far and hurled a corrosive liquid at his target.

Neither Ross or Joe wanted Debbie to get in trouble for her part in the attack, with Joe even paying Simon £100k to keep her name out of it.

But when Ross decided to get justice and force Simon to confess to the police – which he did in October 2018, he told them Debbie had instigated the attack.

Debbie was arrested and held on remand, before being granted bail.

When is Debbie’s trial in Emmerdale and will she go to prison?

Debbie’s trial for her part in the attack on Ross Barton is due to begin on Friday 14 December 2018.

If Debbie is found guilty, she’ll be spending the festive season behind bars.

Her solicitor has already told her that she could be looking at a five-year stretch if she’s sent down.

It’s not yet known if Debbie will be found guilty but she’s confessed to dad Cain Dingle that she’s worried about being torn away from her kids – Jack and Sarah.
Debbie has been in turmoil as Sarah has just had a heart transplant.

Has Debbie been to prison before?

If Debbie is jailed it won’t be her first time behind bars. She was jailed –wrongly - previously for the murder of PC Shane Doyle, who was actually killed by Jasmine Thomas.

Jasmine returned for the trial after going on the run and confessed that it was her who killed Shane after he tried to rape her.

Debbie was charged with perverting the course of justice and released due to time already served.
