Born in St Matthews, South Carolina, she began her acting career starring in minor theatre productions.
After graduating from the Juilliard School in 1993, Viola began her career on stage and won an Obie Award in 1999 for her performance as Ruby McCollum in Everybody's Ruby.
Her breakthrough roles were in the 2008 film Doubt and of course 2011 film The Help.
Since 2014 she has played the lead role of lawyer Annalise Keating in TV show How to Get Away with Murder.
