Before she passed away, Rita could not recognise Linda or members of her family.

It’s this fear that Linda said makes her keen to keep her brain active.

She told : “I test myself all the time to check I’m not getting it.

“I try to remember numbers, things like that. It was awful seeing the woman I worshipped deteriorate.”

What are the stages of dementia?

Many cases of dementia start with early warning signs. This early stage is known as cognitive impairment and can be barely noticeable or mistaken for something else, such as depression.

These include slight:

  • slowness of thought
  • difficulty with planning
  • trouble with language
  • problems with attention and concentration
  • mood or behavioural changes

“I can never thank them enough for the way they looked after my mum.

“I have mixed feelings returning – my mum died here, but she died here comfortable with the best possible treatment you could have.”

Linda added: “Her death wasn’t unexpected but it was still a shock.

“People think hospices are depressing places but they aren’t – we took so much comfort knowing there was someone looking after Mum round the clock.

“Every person who walked through the door was cared for – not just the patients, but the families too.”
