Great British Bake Off’s Kim-Joy, Ruby Bhogal and Rahul Mandal are one of the youngest trios to reach final
GREAT British Bake Off judge Paul Hollywood promised “the best final ever” as three contestants made their way through to the climax of this year’s competition.
Kim-Joy, 27, Ruby Bhogal, 29, and Rahul Mandal, 30, are one of the youngest trios to reach the showpiece.
The last time the final line-up was so youthful was in 2013, when the average age was 27. This year it is 28.
Paul, who judges alongside Prue Leith, said: “It’s going to be a fantastic final next week. We have got three great bakers and each one of them has this very artistic flair.
“If they bring their A-game, that is going to be the best final ever – I promise you.”
The line-up for the final, which will be screened on Channel 4 next Tuesday at 8pm, was decided when Briony Williams, 33, from Bristol, became the ninth baker to leave the tent in the semi-final.
She said: “I was really proud that I got as far as I did. I didn’t think I would make it through the first episode, let alone to the ninth.
“I never felt sad that I didn’t make it to the final, I was just so happy. I really did leave with a big smile on my face.”
Ruby Bhogal, 29, Project Manager
The London Underground project manager likes to put a little booze into her baking.
Her most memorable moment in the tent suggested she might have been a bit tipsy herself.
During Vegan Week, viewers watched in horror and mild delight as Ruby’s multi- storey cake collapsed as she was taking a stroll outside.
But the Londoner did win a Paul Hollywood handshake in Cake Week.
And even when Ruby made a simple mistake during Biscuit Week – baking 25 instead of 24 – she got away with it by explaining: “I’m bad at maths.”
Kim-Joy, 27, Mental Health Worker
KIM-JOY was in tears during a disastrous Danish Week when she scraped her way into the semi-finals.
But her most memorable moment in the tent was a baking triumph – thanks to an intricate chandelier made of spiced biscuits.
Viewers loved some of her crazier moments too. These included the incredible space turtles from Dessert Week and the decision to base orange blossom biscuits on her hair conditioner.
But Kim-Joy, from Leeds, was the Bake Off contestant who was smart enough to tell fellow baker Dan that the long pink “biscuit baby” he had iced on to one of his creations looked like something rather more saucy.

Rahul Mandal, 30, Research Analyst
He has been named Star Baker twice – and Paul branded him “a little genius”.
But Rahul’s stress levels peaked when he got into the semi-finals after serving up raw bread and burnt pancakes.
Rahul, from Rotherham, has remained a favourite with the viewers throughout, particularly when he apologised for being TOO good during Spice Week and revealed a strange fascination for pheasants.
And our hearts melted when Paul praised how well his selfie biscuits captured his “chubby little face”.
