The 28-year-old took over from Whitney Houston as the female artist with the most awards after winning four gongs at Tuesday's ceremony
TAYLOR Swift made history at the American Music Awards on Tuesday night after scooping four gongs.
The 28-year-old overtook Whitney Houston as the most awarded female artist, having taken her tally up to 23.
The star - who took to the stage at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles to sing her song, I Did Something Bad, from her recent album, Reputation, had previously won 19 AMAs.
Tonight she added four more to her mantelpiece, including the coveted Artist of the Year, and is now only one behind Michael Jackson, who currently holds the record for the most-awarded winner with 24 gongs.
Taylor looked incredible in glittering black bodysuit which featured a key hole neckline as she performed.
She teamed it with over the knee black boots and busted out some of her best moves surrounded by her dancers.
Soon after her performance, she won her first gong of the night for Best Tour and took to the stage to thank everyone involved.
She said: "First of all I want to thank my tour mates Charli XCX and Camila Cabello."
Taylor also thanked all the crew and staff who helped, saying: "We have 368 people on the tour who leave their families to do the tour.
"Most of all, to the fans, if you didn’t want to hang out with us….we wouldn’t have been on an amazingly fun stadium tour. I love you guys, thank you."
Later in the ceremony, she received another award for Pop/Rock Album for Reputation.
She rounded things off with Artist of the Year and became the night's biggest winner, despite the fact Drake and Cardi B had lead the nominations with eight each, followed by Ed Sheeran and Post Malone who had six, while Camila Cabello had five and went on to win two.
Of her third win, she said: "OK, wow, this has been... to the fans, you have been so nice to me, you're so funny, and so cool and so loyal.
"It's not lost on me, I'm so lucky to have anyone who cares about me and my music.
"Everytime that you have made me lucky enough to stand on a stage and have something sparkly in my hand, it means something different every time.
"This time, it represents encouragement and motivation for me to be better, work harder and make you guys proud as much as I possibly can."
Taylor then reminded everyone the awards are voted for by the public before getting political, signing off saying: "You know what else is voted on by the people? The mid term elections so get out and vote. I love you guys."
She won her fourth award away from the televised ceremony for Favourite Female Pop/Rock.
Cardi was the first winner of the night, picking up the award for Best Rap/Hip-Hop Artist.
She said: "I'm so nervous. Thank you so much, thank you to all my fans.
"Thank you family, thank you Jesus."
The 25-year-old then thanked her baby daughter Kulture, saying: "I really want to thank my daughter, not just because she's my daughter but while I was pregnant I was like 'I've got to do this, I've got to prove people wrong'."
Then half singing, she said: "They said I wasn't going to make it after I had a baby."
"And my husband, hey husband."
She went on to perform her song I Like It, complete with revealing outfit and plenty of gyrating, and secured further wins away from the televised ceremony.
Mariah Carey was another highly anticipated performer on the night, singing her new song With You for the first time.
The star looked sensational in a pink gown, and gave a sultry performance as she was surrounded by topless male dancers.
Former High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens spoke on the red carpet about her upcoming movie alongside Jennifer Lopez, Second Act.
She said: "It’s the best thing ever, actually it was so special.
"We share a really special connection with each other so working together was so easy."
When Jennifer, 49, arrived later in the red carpet, she also spoke about the movie and her song Limitless, which she is performing at the ceremony.
She said: "I love this song so much I don’t even know what to say about it.
"It’s empowering and I feel really proud that I get to sing it."
As for the movie, she added: "It’s Maid in Manhattan or The Wedding Planner, in that vein.
"It’s a romantic comedy about life. I couldn’t be happier for people to see it and hear it."
She then blasted out the song, standing on a podium in a shimmering jumpsuit and matching jacket surrounded by dancers.
Also speaking on the red carpet was Dua Lipa, who was nominated for New Artist of the Year but lost out to Camila Cabello.
The 23-year-old said of her career so far: "It’s been such an amazing whirlwind of my life, I’m so grateful for it."
The New Rules singer also spoke about her collaboration with opera star Andrea Bocelli.
She said: "It’s a very special song, every time I collaborate with artists I want to do something different and people don’t expect me to work with.
"Andrea has got such a special voice, to collaborate with him, it was as if it was made for Disney, it was very sweet. I’m very proud of it.
"It was a very calming experience, when you hear it, you’ll feel it."
Dua then performed her song One Kiss during the ceremony surrounded by dancers.

Rita Ora stopped to chat on the red carpet, looking glam in a black fishtail gown.
She said: "I like to dress up and have fun with clothes.
"I just went to boxing like three hours ago and I’m not even lying, I can’t feel my legs. Feel the burn."
The 27-year-old also spoke about her upcoming album, Phoenix.
She revealed: "It’s my first global ever release for an album, I feel like I’ve got a new lease of life and it’s something really brand new.
"I’m really excited to express my music to the world."
Having waited so long to release it, Rita admitted there was "a bit of pressure" to get it right, but she added: "At the same time I’m just happy it’s going to come out.
"I’ve learned so much about song writing and I’m happy to express myself creatively."
Ciara also chatted ahead of her performance, saying: "It’s been many years since I’ve been on the stage so I want to make it special and fun.
"I’m excited it’s going to be a fun night. I’m ready to rock the stage."
And she did just that, putting on one of the most energetic performances of the night alongside Missy Elliott.
The 32-year-old was surrounded by dancers as she performed a slick routine, receiving rapturous applause from the crowd when she finished.
However there were some emotional moments during the show, including Carrie Underwood's performance of Spinning Bottles and the Aretha Franklin tribute to close the show.
Fans were also choked up when XXXTentacion's mother stepped on stage to accept his award for Best soul/R&B album, just four months after his shock death aged 20.
Also taking to the red carpet was Ella Mai, who was nominated for her first AMA, and Home Alone actor Macaulay Culkin, who pulled a series of poses for the paparazzi and delighted fans by making the rare red carpet appearance.
Meanwhile Tyra Banks spoke about her new movie, Life Size 2, which comes out later this year while on the red carpet.
She said: "Life size 2 is coming. I was asked to do it 17 years ago and I’ve finally said yes."
The 44-year-old also spoke about her hosting gig on America's Got Talent, joking: "I get sick every season and it’s because of the snot and the tears when they cry during auditions."
