Vanessa Feltz says gastric band left her feeling like she was ‘drowning’ as she’d wake up with liquid dripping from her mouth

VANESSA Feltz has revealed her gastric band has caused her hell and is now faced with the decision on whether to have it removed.

The 56-year-old opened up to Holly and Phil on ITV's This Morning.

Vanessa Feltz revealed to Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield that she had to seek medical advice after experiencing around eight episodes of a 'drowning' sensation.

She said: "It's started acting up something chronic. I wasn't even sure it had anything to do with the band. I was fast asleep and woke up and felt like I was drowning. My whole mouth, nose, ears, eyes seemed to be full of liquid."

Vanessa, who was joined on the sofa by Dr Shaw Somers, said she is now at the point where she can't swallow food or get a good night's sleep.

Dr Somers explained: "Sometimes the band slips out of position and all your saliva and excretions build up above the band - you’re not always aware of it until you lie flat. It’s no shame on Vanessa, and thousands like Vanessa need extra support."

The BBC Radio 2 presenter went under the knife eight years ago following the heartbreak of her husband walking out on their marriage.

During her appearance on This Morning, Vanessa opened up about her relationship with food.

She said: "After my husband left I was properly heartbroken, and couldn't eat, and for the first time I lost a hell of a lot of weight and I began to get happier again. So the more I ate again and the weight went back on, and it was that yo-yo thing."

Despite the health scares the gastric band has caused, Vanessa still isn't sure whether she can go under the knife again.

On getting the gastric band removed, she said: "I don't want to have it taken out. I’m scared I'll suddenly eat and entire camel and a heard of elephants. It's been restricting me for eight years. I can walk into any shop and buy a dress that fits. Plus I don't want an operation for something I don't want."

"But the alternative sounds extreme. A bypass feels like a big deal.
