ITV crime drama Vera shut down as crew ‘struck down by mystery illness’

ITV crime drama Vera has been shut down as cast and crew were 'struck down by mystery illness'.

Filming for the ninth series of the hit show was underway but had to be halted due to a sickness bug that was going around the team.

A source told the Mirror: "Several people have been taken unwell, and filming just could not go on – key cast members were going to be absent. Producers took the decision to delay the shoot this week.

“Hopefully they will be able to reconvene soon."

The news was confirmed to the paper by an ITV source, who said filming had been “temporarily halted” until the crew were feeling better.

It's unclear when they will return to filming, which could delay the show's air date, featuring Brenda Blethyn, 72, as DCI Vera Stanhope.

This wasn't the only hiccup the cast and crew have faced during filming.

Brenda has previously said they were constantly pooped on by birds while they were trying to shoot the North-East based show.

She told Radio Times: “It was beautiful on the Farne Islands, even though we were bombed by the birds who pooped on us.

“But we must consider that lucky because there was quite a lot of it! It was lovely seeing the seals close up."

Brenda is back for series 9, despite saying that series 7 could have been her last one.

Speaking about why she decided to carry on with the show, she told What's On TV: "I kind of missed doing it. The only way I can describe it is if you go out for a big slap-up meal and you’ve eaten too much and someone says, ‘Would you like to see the menu?’ you go, ‘Oh no, please leave me alone!’ but a week later you get hungry!

"You never know what your circumstances are going to be, but the success of the show has been overwhelming and to be central to that is rather a nice feeling.”

Brenda is also confirmed to be returning for the news series of the long-running show.
