Admit to your hair transplant David Beckham — I did it and you can too

IF someone who looks like me can be honest about having a hair transplant then David Beckham can be too.

Last month, in this column, I revealed the heart-throb – whose every physical trait has, until this point, been nothing but perfect – had become one of a growing number of middle-aged men to choose the dramatic op in order to maintain his locks.

That’s a decision I understand.

While most blokes refuse to admit it, there’s a growing body of evidence to show going bald can have psychological repercussions, no matter how good you look with a skinhead.

My hair started falling out when I was 23 and it was a decade later that I finally decided to go through with the highly unpleasant 14-hour surgery with the team at the Harley Street Hair Clinic, who had just become famous for conducting the procedure on Wayne Rooney.

Sure, it was a touch embarrassing but, when I returned to the Lorraine sofa on ITV two weeks after the procedure, I immediately revealed what I’d had done — even showing pics of my bloody, shaved head and basking in support from viewers as my hair grew back.

A-listers including X Factor judge Robbie Williams, actor James Nesbitt, Strictly pro Anton Du Beke, music mogul Louis Walsh and Neighbours legend Jason Donovan all did the same.

The reaction was mild curiosity at the time, before everyone quickly forgot and moved on.

But those honest stars have helped to normalise the decision to want to have a full head of hair for a new generation, who won’t feel humiliated in the future.

But like so much in Beckham’s life, straight-forward honesty appears to be out of the question with his dramatic transformation on top.

His Godlike superior complex means the thought of just admitting he’s had his hair buffed up like so many others is unthinkable.

Instead, the man who shares every intimate detail of his private life, right down to his moisturising routine, claimed that a decision to have a hair transplant is private.  However, as is so often the case, the attempt to hide the op has had almost farcical results.

Entertainment websites across the world have feasted on pictures examining his dramatically changing hairline over the past few weeks – where he went from being bald in a Miami pool to a weave so thick and straight in Hong Kong, it had to be sprayed on.

Becks, do us all a favour – have a laugh about your little op, admit you’ve joined the club who want to preserve our hair for longer than nature sometimes dictates and lay off the hairspray paint from now on.
