David eventually escaped death with the help of a bomb disposal expert, after convincing police he was not involved in Julia Montague's assassination.

However, David was only set free from the vest after 50 minutes of his finger being strapped to the detonating button - causing great "anxiety" among viewers.

Taking to Twitter, one wrote: "Never been more tense in my life than watching Dave try to deactivate his suicide vest."

While another added: "Thank f*ck that suicide vest didn't detonate when #DavidBudd was attempting to disarm it. I couldn't watch, my #anxiety was triggered! Loved the series"

As other viewers claimed the scene was bothering them the following day, writing: "Still feeling pretty tense after the #bodyguard. Paranoid about sudden noises and movements."

Nadiya reveals she built the bomb that killed Julia in shock Bodyguard twist

11 million viewers tuned in to see CSI Lorraine Craddock, Luke Aitkens and bomb creator Nadia exposed as Julia's killers.

The figures mean the drama, which starred Keeley Hawes alongside Madden, is the BBC's most-watched series for more than a decade.

Speaking after the finale, creator Jed Mercurio revealed he left no loose ends because he wrote it as just one series.

However he has since revealed it will return for a second series as well as four spin-offs, after being met with such a rave reception.
