Great British Bake Off 2018 – who left Bake Off last week and who was Star Baker for week four?
THE 2018 series of The Great British Bake Off is underway!
This week was Dessert and the bakers rose to the challenges and produced some masterpieces. So whose creations weren't quite sweet enough and who claimed the coveted Star Baker title?
What happened during Dessert Week?
Eight bakers took the task of making difficult desserts for the judges - with the ninth baker, Terry, missing.
But who impressed Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith?
Here were the winners and losers of each challenge:
- Signature Bake - The first challenge was roulade. Many of the contestants opted for fruity flavours, and both Dan and Jon earned themselves handshakes from Paul. Karen wasn't quite so lucky, and her effort fell flat of expectations.
- Technical Challenge - Prue requested a raspberry blancmange (with a wobble!) with 12 identical langues de chat biscuits. The challenge made for some tense moments as bakers teased their blancmanges out of the tin - with some melting straight away. Judges were impressed by Rahul's flavour and wobble, but the underbaked biscuits let him down. Manon sturggled with a blancmange that didn't set, while Ruby made "beautifully piped" biscuits. Manon came last in eighth place, while Dan came out on top.
- The Showstopper challenge was to create a melting chocolate ball dessert concealing a surprise inside. The chocolate sphere when topped with a hot sauce melts to reveal the dessert within. Tricky. Both Ruby and Briony struggled when their spheres cracked, while Kim Joy set herself the difficult task of creating a galaxy-themed ball filled with turtles
Who left the tent in episode four of GBBO 2018?
After much tasting and deliberating Prue and Paul decided that NO-ONE would be leaving.
"The judges felt it wouldn't be fair to send someone home with Terry not being here," Noel explained.
He added that there was a "strong possibility" that two people would leave next week upon Terry's return.
Who was the fourth Star Baker?
Dan's attention to detail impressed the judges and he claimed the coveted title.
Before entering the tent, Dan revealed his reasons for being on Bake Off were "entirely selfish".
He said: "I have been at home looking after the kids for the last six years, so it was a chance to do something for myself.
"I bake in the little spare time that I have, and often work on bakes over the course of several days.
"I never work to strict time constraints like those in the tent, so that was a real challenge for me."
Where was Terry?
Sandi announced at the beginning of the programme: "Now as you all know unfortunately Terry is not with us today because he is poorly, but with the agreement of absolutely everybody he is going to be allowed to come back next week."
Despite the announcement - which explained that the rest of the bakers had unanimously agreed to allow him to proceed to next week - many of those watching at home were confused by why the moustached-favourite Terry was missing from the tent.
