THE creator of Wanderlust has teased at a huge plot twist regarding Joy's bike accident.
The therapist, played by Toni Collette, is seen being hit by a car in flashbacks during the first two episodes, but the show's writer has now hinted there is more to the crash than meets the eye.
Nick Payne told the : "I knew that I wanted a riddle that's kind of back-loaded in terms of the bike and the accident.
"You know, that maybe goes somewhere I think - spoiler alert - that isn't quite what you think it is in the first episode.
"So I knew that I had all that in the arsenal, or whatever the word is. That's just one of those choices you make and you're not conscious of it."
Only adding to the mystery, director Luke Snellin revealed fate plays an important part in future episodes, and that viewers should look out for how the characters are drawn together.
He said: "You sort of see that pattern emerge, of fate sort of stepping in and just knocking them towards certain possibilities.
"And as Nick said, as the series goes on you discover more about Joy and potentially there's a lot more complexity and underlying psychology to come forward in the story."
The BBC drama follows Joy and Alan, a couple who are bored of their sex life and decide to open themselves up to other options, and people.
Despite airing plenty of sex scenes the raunchy series has divided viewers, with some even branding the most recent episode "weird" and "cringe".
Fans were taken aback by the number of racy encounters during the first 15 minutes, as Joy had sex with her swimming pal Marvin, while husband Alan romped a teacher from his school.
Some viewers even vowed to switch off on Twitter, writing: "Well, I'm bailing out after ep.2, this is utter kack!!!" and "This is terrible #wanderlust."
However, others were full of praise, with one tweeting: "Wanderlust is soooooo goooooood!", while another added: "#wanderlust @ToniCollette2 and whole cast, brilliant. Loved it tonight. Cannot wait for next."
