BODYGUARD fans were left shocked tonight as Keeley Hawes' character was killed off.
The fourth episode of the hit BBC drama began in the aftermath of the explosion which went off during Home Secretary Julia Montague's speech.
For the first 15 minutes, viewers had no idea if Julia - played by Keeley - had survived the blast, but eventually, it was revealed she had succumbed to her injuries.
Viewers were left stunned by writer Jed Mercurio's decision to kill off a major character with two episodes in the series left to go.
Taking to Twitter, viewers shared their shock at the latest twist, with one writing: "Wtf...seriously gobsmacked now..jaw hit the floor #Bodyguard."
Another added: "WHAT THE F*** IS GOING ON #Bodyguard" and a third tweeted: "WHAT THE ACTUAL EFFIN HELL #BODYGUARD."
The shocks kept coming though, as moments later, a Julia's devastated personal protection officer David Budd - played by Richard Madden - tried to take his own life.
Digging out his gun, David held it to his head and eventually pulled the trigger.
Viewers were stunned to think both main characters had been killed off within moments of each other, but it turned out David miraculously survived, having shot a blank by mistake.
Speaking to his estranged wife afterwards, David said he had no idea how the blank had got into his gun, saying: "It was a blank round, I didn't know it was.
"I don't know how that could have happened."
The scenes had viewers emotions running high, with one writing: "#Bodyguard is seriously playing with my emotions."
A second tweeted about Jed: "Well, that was a nasty little trick to play Jed! #Bodyguard" and a third added: "I can't cope with the amount of twists!"
A fourth agreed, writing: "WHAT IS HAPPENING IN #BODYGUARD THIS IS CRAZY".
