TAKING ON TABOOS

Wanderlust star Toni Collette bravely tackles the issue of monogamy in marriage and says ‘life has changed’

TONI COLLETTE is one of the world’s most accomplished actors and one of my personal favourites.

She has also been married to musician Dave Galafassi for 15 years and the couple have two children.

But I’ve loved how bravely she is tackling monogamy in marriages – one of those ultra-taboo issues in society – on new BBC1 drama Wanderlust.

In an exclusive interview for ITV’s Lorraine show, she told me: “Marriage, the institution of marriage was introduced at a time when people didn’t live as long as we live.

"Life has changed.

“I just think we’re all such sheep.

"We’re kind of born into this world and we subscribe to a certain way of living without any kind of real thought as to how you want to authentically spend your time on planet earth.

“This kind of questions all of those societal expectations and norms.”

When I asked about her personal view on the ideal of monogamy, she answered: “Well I’m married so that probably gives you a hint of what I believe in. But I think about it.

“There are so many options about how to spend your time here, what’s important to you, what your values are, what you believe in, who you connect with.

“There are no rules.

"I think people tend to forget that they have the option of living the way they want to live.”

And Toni is pushing for the Beeb to make a second series – even though it would mean filming again in a Manchester winter.
She says: “If they don’t I’ll be furious. I’m desperate to do it again. It’s one of the best job of my life. I would do it on the moon. I don’t care where we do it. I’d gladly do it again and again.”
