TOWIE fans have praised “brave” Tommy Mallet as he talked about his struggles with his mental health during tonight's episode.
He was supported by his girlfriend Georgia Kousoulou as he opened up about a period of time in his life when he was struggling to cope.
Sitting over breakfast in Sardina, Tommy, 26, explained: “I just sat there and looked at a wall. I couldn’t leave the house. I know it was only a few days but still.
“It was scary.”
Calling what he went through a breakdown, Georgia replied: “That’s why I called your dad, it was awful.”
He took a moment before telling her: “I feel like I need to do something to people. I need to sort myself out first. But if you’re going through something and you don’t talk about it…”
Tommy started to cry and Georgia told him she was proud of him for how far he had come.
Fans flocked to Twitter to praise his honesty, with one writing: “Yes, yes, mother***ing YES to this.
“@tommy_mallet thank you for being honest and helping to normalise talking about mental health.”
Another tweeted: “I know how hard it can be. With so many young viewers it’s amazing that @tommy_mallet is speaking out and bringing awareness to such a big audience.”
While a third said: “How refreshing for Tommy & Georgia to talk about something actually relevant compared to the Instagram/Twitter “likes” war between cast members!”
A fourth told their followers: “@tommy_mallet #itsokaynottobeokay very brave to publicly admit your struggles. In men it's seen as a weakness by some, you came across so strong talking about it.”
Before the episode aired, Tommy told his fans: “You never know what’s behind the smile of a young man these days!!!
“It’s only human for s**t to come on top some times... Fellas if you feel down go and talk about it...”
Later in the episode he said he'd opened up to some of his pals about how he felt.
Tommy then vowed to try and make positive changes in his life to help his mental health.
He told Georgia: “I’m grateful you took me here. I am going to balance my life more. I will go to work and then I will come home and it’s time for you.
“I was talking to Sam earlier, he had exactly the same thing. I thought, I’m not off my head and it happens to everyone.”
Tommy quit the show in 2017 after saying he wanted a break from the drama.
He said at the time: “I owe a lot to the show and I will always be part of it but it’s time to concentrate on my businesses.
“I’m working two jobs and I’m in big important meetings one day and on Towie the next getting ag, swearing and calling someone something too rude to print!”
