Who is BBC Radio 6 and Glastonbury host Lauren Laverne?

LAUREN Laverne started her career as an Indie pop star in the 90s, before moving on to become a top radio and TV presenter.

Sadly, in August 2024, the broadcaster revealed that she has cancer.

Who is Lauren Laverne?

Lauren Laverne was born Lauren Cecilia Gofton in Sunderland on April 28, 1978.

She's had a varied career that includes modelling, writing, singing, comedy and being on the radio.

Lauren is also a writer who published her first novel, Candypop – Candy and the Broken Biscuits, back in 2010.

She had a newspaper column from 2012 to 2014, where she wrote about style and culture.

But in April 2015, she decided to launch her own venture - The Pool - a website aimed at women.

She co-founded the site with her magazine editor pal Sam Baker, and the site boasts regular podcasts and videos with Caitlin Moran.

What has happened to Lauren Laverne?

On August 21, 2024, Lauren revealed she has cancer.

She made the brave announcement in an Instagram post from her hospital bed.

The host explained she had been diagnosed with the disease but it was caught early.

Lauren did not reveal what type of cancer she is continuing to battle, but said it was spotted during a screening test.

She said: "I recently had a cancer diagnosis. It was (thank God) caught early and unexpectedly during a screening test and I am expected to make a full recovery.

"I'm in hospital at the moment and wanted to take this moment to say thank you: firstly to medical teams who have got me this far with incredible skill and kindness.

"To my family and friends who have been absolutely extraordinary every step of the way - I am so very grateful and love you so much.

"And of course thank you to my colleagues.... for their support and for giving me the time off that I need to get better."

What is Lauren Laverne known for?

Lauren shot to fame as the lead singer and guitarist in the rock band Kenickie in the 90s.

The band consisted of Lauren, her brother Pete - AKA Johnny X - Marie du Santiago and Emmy-Kate Montrose.

Kenickie is named after the band's favourite character in the film Grease.

Their career highlights include their debut album, At The Club, peaking at No9 in the UK Albums Chart back in 1997 and playing Glastonbury in the summer of 1997.

They split in October 1998 after a gig at London Astoria.

These days Lauren is known for her work on the radio and currently presents the breakfast show on BBC Radio 6 Music.

She also hosts Glastonbury for the BBC every year.

In 2018, Lauren took over presenting of Desert Island Discs.

Is Lauren Laverne married and does she have children?

Lauren married television producer and DJ Graeme Fisher back in August 2005.

The pair live together in Muswell Hill, London, and raise two children together - Fergus James and Mack.

Lauren has previously revealed her husband is the culinary mastermind in the family, while she is learning how to make a slap up meal.

She said: "My husband cooks. I’m learning, but slowly."
