The Durrells ‘has been axed’ after four series as writer thinks show has ‘nowhere else to go’
THE Durrells will be axed after its fourth series because its writer thinks it has "nowhere to go".
According to new reports, the hugely popular 1930s comedy drama is to see its final scenes air next year.
It is believed Keeley Hawes, 42, and the rest of the cast will fly to Corfu in September to begin filming for the final time.
Based on three books by Gerald Durrell, the television series set on the Greek island has been written by Simon Nye.
Speaking to the , an ITV source said: "The vast majority of the adventures in the books have been told.
"Simon has been brilliant at coming up with episodes, but there is not really anywhere left to go.
"He feels he has done all he can."
It was recently revealed that Keeley - who plays mum Louisa Durrell - is to star in new BBC drama Bodyguard, and the Mirror report that she has other offers in the pipeline for 2019.
Josh O'Connor, 28, who plays her son Lawrence, has been cast as Prince Charles in the upcoming series of The Crown.
The Sun Online has approached ITV for comment.
It comes after The Durrells star Alexis Georgoulis has revealed he has chemistry in real life with actress Keeley Hawes.
The Greek actor, known as the George Clooney of Greece, appeared on Lorraine to speak about the future for his character.
On the ITV show he plays Spiro, a close friend and taxi driver for The Durrell family, while Keeley plays matriarch Louisa Durrell.
Over the last two series viewers have watched Spiro and Louisa develop a very tight bond.
But in recent episodes they have grown even closer after Spiro suddenly finds himself single after being dumped by his wife.
Speaking about a potential romance between Spiro and Louisa, he teased: “I can't tell you, but the chemistry is there.
“The first shooting day with Keeley, I felt like we had good chemistry.”
