OK, well how about an exquisite fairy tale crime drama seemingly simultaneously spewed from the minds of both Del Torro and Ridley Scott.

Vaguely based on the story of Giuseppe Di Matteo, a young boy kidnapped for over 2 years by the mafia, in response to his dad turning grass.

Whilst that element actually happened, this story taken some pretty incredible turns, not least the ghost that appears through the eyes of Luna, Giuseppe’s young sweetheart who is hankering after and searching for her first love.

Angry at the wall of silence surrounding his disappearance (the entire village are complicit in their refusal to get involved in the crime), she allows her fantastical imagination to guide her to him.

The two kids are incredible, especially as this is their first feature film.

What separates this from your average mob film, or even a regular fantasy, is the directors’ choice to focus on the children’s connection or the beautiful Sicilian scenery.

Beautiful and enchanting.
