EASTENDERS fans praised the soap tonight for including a last minute reference to England crashing out of the World Cup.
Billy, played by Perry Fenwick, captured the spirit of fans around the country as he expressed his misery but also his pride – while Mel (Tamzin Outhwaite) made a cheeky Spurs reference.
During the episode a devastated Billy was caught sewing up his Gareth Southgate inspired waistcoat by Mel and Hunter in the club.
Confused, Mel asked him what he was doing and he told her he had destroyed his waistcoat after England lost to Croatia, but later had a change of heart about his actions.
He said: “I went to Hyde Park last night to watch the game. I got the hump so I tore up the Gareth. I had the hump because he took Sterling off.
“I’d had a few beers. I woke up this morning and felt bit guilty you know, it wasn’t Southgate’s fault, was it?”
Mel and Hunter both tried to comfort him – saying of course it wasn’t the manager’s fault.
Billy continued: “So I thought I would fix it up wear it on Saturday. We’ve still got third place to play for and football can still come home, we’re just going to have to wait a few more years.”
As he left the room, Mel quipped to Hunter: “In his defence he should have taken off Alli not Stirling, far too many Tottenham players.”
Those watching at home loved it and took to Twitter to comment on it, with one person writing: “The current #Eastenders reactions are always good but I’ve enjoyed all the #WorldCup ones, summing up the nation’s feelings.”
Another added: “I love that #eastenders fit in world cup mentions, nice and topical”
And a further wrote: “He should of taken Alli off, instead of Sterling...” Oi oi Mel!#EastEnders #CROENG.”
The special scene follows an array of topical World Cup scenes on the soap including one where the residents of Walford celebrated England's victory against Sweden in the quarter final.
Mick Carter has been the main force in leading England's World Cup celebrations.
The soap also aired scenes of Danny Dyer leading some of EastEnders’ most famous faces in singing "It's Coming Home" from Three Lions.
Mick was told Halfway in one scene: “Start believing because we've got Jordan Pickford between the sticks and 'av some handsome Harry up front, even though he's Tottenham.
“Just give us the trophy."
Mick also gave his take on England's performance against Croatia in another episode.
He also took a swipe at ex Spurs ace Luka Modric and the playmaker's talents on the field.
Talking to his onscreen mum Shirley, Mick said: “I tell you what we want to do.
“Stick someone on Modric early doors. He gets more space than NASA that little mug.
“Then we wait for a corner and get Harry Maguire’s head on it and boom, right in the net.
"Tata Croatia. We get in that final and we’ll win it. I’ve already told you it’s coming home haven’t I?”
