Sheridan Smith suffers box office flop as new film The More You Ignore Me ONLY takes £8,420 on its opening weekend

SHERIDAN Smith’s new film The More You Ignore Me has bombed at the box office – taking just £8420 in its opening weekend.

The actress, 37, has done a string of rare radio interviews to promote the dark comedy, penned by comedian Jo Brand, 60, but it has proved a complete flop with audiences.

It trailed behind the No1 film The Purge which took £1.8million over the same three-day period.

Sheridan plays schizophrenic young mum Gina, who is admitted to a psychiatric ward after becoming obsessed with a local weatherman in the production.

Her daughter Alice then concocts a plan to reconnect with her heavily-medicated mother.

She spent five weeks shooting the film, set to the music of The Smiths, in Blackpool in 2016, months after pulling out of West End show Funny Girl over claims she was drunk on stage.

Speaking about the film, Sheridan, who is now engaged to ex-city worker Jamie Horn, said last month: “It’s a great film, it’s a great project. I loved working on it.”

It also stars Sally Phillips, 48, Sheila Hancock, 85, and her The Royle Family co-star Ricky Tomlinson, 78.

David Walliams, 46, Stephen Fry, 60, and John Bishop, 51, have tweeted about the film in recent weeks in an unsuccessful bid to encourage punters to buy tickets.
