The singer's bandmate Cheryl Baker also tweeted an update after hearing from Jay's husband Dave writing: “Jay is stable in ICU Awake and responding well.

"I will be going back in the morning... she knows you're all thinking about her and is being very brave.

"She's in good hands and all the surgery went to plan."

Last month the Eurovision winner bravely opened up about her battle with the disease.

She told the : “I think if they take more of my tongue away the chances of me singing, even talking, will be very slim."

The Making Your Mind Up singer faced a choice between losing her voice or not having treatment, and with a young daughter, it was a no-brainer.

She added tearfully: "I have a young daughter, I want to see her grow up, I want to see her get married and see her grandchildren."

Jay immediately told doctors after her diagnosis that she had to survive to be there for her daughter.

But she was hugely emotional after the diagnosis and broke down on the train home.

She said: “After they told me, I got on the train and bawled my eyes out. Everyone was looking at me. I called my husband, and then Cheryl.

“The thought of rejoining the band is now keeping me going. Being on stage with them is my happy place. Whatever you go through, it doesn’t matter when you are on stage."

The singer has been touring the UK with the original members Cheryl Baker, 64, and Mike Nolan, 63.

In order to ensure she could carry on after she has a biopsy which will stop her ability to sing, she has recorded vocals so she can lipsync at the gigs and continue performing so she can still work and pay her bills.

She added: “They can’t say whether I’ll be able to sing like I used to. It’s made me realise I completely took my singing for granted. Now I realise the talent I had is possibly going to go."

Jay also revealed that not being able to perform with the band would mean she would have to sell her home.

But she remained hopeful and the surgeons are working with her to ensure the skin removed from her leg to make a new tongue will be high enough so she can do the band's famous skirt-ripping performance.

She added: “I am determined to be back this summer. I’ll mime, I won’t be able to dance, and skirt-ripping will be interesting but it’s getting me through."
