EVERY May 5, a group of 40-something blokes recommence the game of tag they’ve been playing since school, coming up with outlandish ways to shout “you’re it”.

Jerry (Jeremy Renner) is the only player never to be caught. This year, the others vow to finally tag him.

For a fun flick, Tag isn't funny enough but it will please kidults with its slapstick, bro-bonding and ladled-on nostalgia

A plot centred around a playground game delivers predictably juvenile results – yet unbelievably this film is actually based on a true story.

Director Jeff Tomsic forgoes all subtlety and plays it unswervingly to please big kidults. There’s slapstick, bro-bonding, bad jokes and ladled-on nostalgia with VHS and mixtape references, Wonder Years-style flashbacks and an admittedly brilliant soundtrack.

A midlife-crisis movie for men who’ve outgrown frat flicks, Tag is so middle-aged even the action scenes take place on a golf course.

For a fun flick, it isn’t ever funny enough but stay put for a decent twist plus brilliant real-life footage of the original Tag Team.
