When did Stephen Gately die?

Stephen Gately died at the age of 33, early on October 10, 2009.

He passed away suddenly in the early hours of the morning while at his holiday home in Port D’Andratx, Majorca.

His body was discovered by his husband Andrew Cowles who he’d marred in 2003.

The night before they’d been out in the Black Cat Club in Palma.

How did the rest of Boyzone react to Stephen Gately’s death?

Stephen’s fellow bandmates from Boyzone flew to Majorca the day after his death on October 11 and issued a joint statement.

It read: “We are completely devastated by the loss of our friend and brother, Stephen.

“We have shared such wonderful times together over the years and were all looking forward to sharing many more.

“Stephen was a beautiful person in both body and spirit.

“He lit up our lives and those of the many friends he had all over the world.

“Our love and sympathy go out to Andrew and Stephen’s family. We love you and will miss you forever, Steo.”

What was Stephen Gately’s cause of death?

At the time of his death, Gerald Kean, Stephen’s friend and Solicitor described the death as a “tragic accident.”

Any suggestion of drug abuse or suicide was ruled out and police found no marks of violence on Stephen’s body.

It was later discovered that Stephen had died due to a pulmonary oedema (fluid in the lungs) as a result of an undiagnosed congenital heart defect.

An article published in the by Jan Moir received heavy criticism after she claimed he had died due to a “dangerous lifestyle.”
