LOVE Island’s series four opener pulled in more than five million viewers — a record for ITV2.
The reality dating show also trounced expensive BBC dramas including Poldark, The Split and Versailles.
The episode got 4.1million television viewers either live or on catch-up in the first seven days.
An additional million watched on tablets, smartphones or computers online via ITV Hub.
Its combined audience of 5.1million trumped Poldark’s 4.8million at the weekend.
It also embarrassed big budget entertainment formats like the BBC’s Let It Shine, which mustered just 4.3million for its finale last year.
And Love Island episode two on Tuesday attracted 3.3million viewers — 100,000 more than BBC1 military drama Our Girl, which aired at the same time.
A TV source said: “Everyone at ITV hoped it’d grow, but they’re chuffed how much it has done.
“It’s by far the most successful show in ITV2’s history and is the biggest audience on a digital channel since the Olympics on BBC Three in 2012.”
