FANS were left baffled when they spotted Coronation Street villain Richard Hillman in the audience of the British Soap Awards tonight.

He famously drove wife Gail Platt and her family into the canal after he was exposed as a serial killer.

Despite Richard, played by actor Brian Capron, meeting a grisly end in 2003, soap fans were left wondering if he was making a return to the soap.

One said: "Right why is Richard Hillman sat next to Gail ? Is he coming back ??"

Another added: "Why is Richard Hillman sitting next to Gail? He being brought back from the dead?"

Someone else said: "Richard Hilman come as Gail’s plus 1."

But in fact actor Brian is nominated for Greatest Moment (Of All Time) for the moment he drove his family into the canal.

He is up against Vivien’s Rape (Doctors, 2008),  ‘You Ain’t My Mother’ (EastEnders, 2001), Hotten By-Pass Crash (Emmerdale, 2016) and Jade Says Goodbye To Alfie (Hollyoaks, 2016).

Sadly Richard lost out on the award to Emmerdale's Hotten By-Pass Crash.
