Who is Roseanne Barr?

Roseanne Barr, 65, is an American actor, comedian and TV producer who began her career in stand-up comedy clubs.

The granddaughter of immigrants from Europe, she was the oldest of four kids in a working class Jewish family living in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Her big break came in 1988 when she starred in the hit TV sitcom Roseanne alongside Golden Globe winner John Goodman.

The show was rebooted for a 10th season in spring 2018 but the planned 11th season was cancelled after Barr sent a racist tweet which she insisted was a joke.

She married and had three kids with Roseanne writer Bill Pentland in 1974 but later divorced him to marry actor Tom Arnold in 1990.

Her marriage with Arnold broke down four years later and in 1995 she married her security guard Ben Thomas.

They had one son named Buck. Their marriage ended in divorce in 2002.

She now lives in Hawaii with her partner Johnny Argent after they met online.

According to CelebrityNetWorth.com, Barr's net worth in 2018 is approximately $80million (£60m).

What controversy has Barr been involved in?

Roseanne, 65, is no stranger to controversy.

She offended many including then-President George Bush Sr with a screeching and "disgraceful" rendition of the National Anthem in 1990.

She sparked outrage by posing as Adolf Hitler in a satirical Jewish publication for a feature called That Oven Feeling.

Fox News host Bill O'Reilly slammed her for "mocking the Holocaust".

And in 2014, she was sued by the parents of George Zimmerman, the neighbourhood watch coordinator who shot black teenager Trayvon Martin, after tweeting his address.

In May 2018 a planned 11th season of Roseanne was cancelled by ABC after Barr sent a racist tweet.

She wrote that former White House adviser Valerie Jarrett is a product of the Muslim Brotherhood and the "Planet of the Apes."

She later apologised for what she called a "joke" that she described as "in bad taste".

Barr said sorry again on July 26 for her controversial Twitter comment but insisted she had been misunderstood and said the mistake "cost me everything".

She said in an hour-long television interview, her first since the uproar, said the tweet was political in nature, not racist.

"I was so sad that people thought it was racist," Barr told Fox News host Sean Hannity.
