What happened on the tapes in 13 Reasons Why?

Season one of 13 Reason Why focuses on Hannah Baker's (Katherine Langford) 13 cassette tapes she leaves in the wake of her suicide.

Each tape details each person who was responsible for her death, and who led her to kill herself.

The series follows Clay (Dylan Minnette)as he listens to each of the cassettes.

Here's what was on those famous tapes...

Tape 1

Justin - Justin's (Brandon Flynn) tape reveals how he upset Hannah when he showed all his friends a photo of her revealing her underwear when going down a slide on a date with him. The result left Hannah humiliated.

Tape 2

Jessica - Hannah and Jessica (Alisha Boe) were best mates - that was until they introduced Alex (Miles Heizer) into their group. Jessica and Alex start dating leaving Hannah out. Alex's "Hot List" then makes the girls fall out, after he says Hannah has the "best ass".

Tape 3

Alex - At first, Clay struggles to understand why Hannah was so hurt by her inclusion on Alex's hit list. But as Hannah explains on the tape, the list “declared open season” on her body. Turns out Alex included Hannah on the list out of spite after Jessica wouldn’t sleep with him.

Tape 4

Tyler - Hannah realises she is being spied on by geeky classmate Tyler (Devin Druid). In attempt to stop him she invites her friend Courtney round to help catch him in the act. But the girls get drunk and end up kissing, with Tyler catching the action on his camera as he hid in the bushes. He then of course shared it with the whole school.

Tape 5

Courtney - While the photo of Courtney (Michele Selene) and Hannah kissing is blurry, some of the kids at school work otu who is in the snap. Trying to shrug off attention, Courtney lies and says that Hannah’s actually kissing “her girlfriend Laura,” and that they had asked her for a three-way.

Tape 6

Marcus - Marcus (Steven Silver), the school’s student body president, asks Hannah on a date but then shows up an hour late, and is accompanied by the entire basketball team. He then tries to put his hand up Hannah’s skirt, but she pushes him off, but he doesn't take it well and calls her names.

Tape 7

Zach - After Marcus' behaviour his friend Zach (Ross Butler) returns to the diner to make sure Hannah’s OK, but she rejects him because she is fed up. He takes revenge in a cruel way. In a class they take together, their teacher has set up a system in which students can leave anonymous notes for each other in “compliments baskets.” Taking revenge, Zach empties Hannah’s basket regularly.

Tape 8

Ryan - Ryan (Tommy Dorfman) is one of the people who breaks Hannah's trust the most. It all starts when Hannah is touched by Ryan’s poetry, and he encourages her to start writing down her thoughts, and gives her a journal. But Ryan betrays her when he tears out a poem from her diary and anonymously publishes it in his magazine.

Tape 9

Sheri - Sheri (Ajiona Alexus) offers Hannah a lift home after a party. She crashes her car into a stop sign, and knocks it over. Sheri drives off leaving Hannah to go and get help. During this time Jeff crashes his car as the stop sign has been removed and he is killed.

Tape 10

Clay - It was a shock revelation when Clay got a tape. But he got one because Hannah thought he should've reacted better to a situation. They start kissing at a party, but due to her bad experiences with the other boys, she pushes him away and he leaves the room after she shouts at him. On the tape she reveals she wishes he had stayed.

Tape 11

Justin... Again - First, Justin gets tape for what he did, next he got one for what he DIDN'T do. When Clay leaves Hannah at the party she stays in the room and Justin puts a drunk Jessica on the bed - without knowing hannah is still in the room. Bryce then enters the room when Justin leaves, and Justin doesn't stop him (even though he looked like he wanted to). Hannah has to listen, whilst hiding, as Bryce rapes an unconscious Jessica.

Tape 12

Bryce - Hannah stumbles upon a party Bryce (Justin Prentice) is throwing in his backyard, and a drunk Jessica invites her to join them in the hot tub. But after Justin, Jessica, and the others leave, Bryce climbs in the tub and rapes Hannah. On the tape, Hannah says Bryce is the one who "broke her soul".

Tape 13

Mr. Porter - Following the rape, Hannah starts to get suicidal thoughts. Realising she needs to get help, Hannah seeks out the school’s counsellor, Mr. Porter (Derek Luke). But the conversation doesn’t go as Hannah had hoped. Mr. Porter says that if Hannah won’t name her rapist’s name, essentially she’ll have to “move on.” Hannah records the incriminating conversation for her final tape.

What are the Polaroids in Clay's locker?

In the final trailer for season two, Clay learns that there are still secrets to be revealed at Liberty High.

He then finds a Polaroid in his locker that reads: “Hannah wasn’t the only one.”

More and more Polaroids with different clues will then appear throughout the series.

This then begins another whodunit mystery, with Hannah far from forgotten.
