MATTHEW Wright has quit talk show The Wright Stuff after 18 years following a series of backstage rows with producers.
The host, who announced on air yesterday that he was stepping down from the Channel 5 programme, has grown tired of the stand-offs.
The clashes became so intense that he refused to front the weekday magazine series and Anne Diamond had to stand in.
A source said: “Matthew has been unhappy for a while and there’s been furious rows.
“After so long in the job, he’d started to flat out lose his temper when producers didn’t let him get his way.”
The impending departure of Wright, 52, was revealed on The Sun’s website yesterday morning.
He then confirmed it on the show before releasing a statement saying it was “time to depart and try my hand at something new”.
The source said the former tabloid journalist also found the 4am starts “harder to tolerate”.
They added: “Despite what he said publicly, he’s made it known behind the scenes that he wasn’t happy with the show moving to a new studio and its overhaul.”
The Wright Stuff hit the headlines last month when talkRADIO host Iain Lee told Wright to “eff off” after being repeatedly quizzed about his marriage.
And days later The Chase quiz star Anne Hegerty made an offensive jibe towards transgender activist Paris Lees.
It was claimed Wright was taken into “crisis talks” by show bosses and ordered to apologise or be taken off air.
Channel 5’s Ben Frow yesterday thanked Wright for his hard work and “making the show what it is today”.
