Tom Cruise risked never being able to run again by finishing Mission Impossible 6 stunts
FEARLESS action star Tom Cruise risked never being able to run again – after defying surgeon’s orders to finish his latest Mission Impossible film.
The Top Gun actor, 55, broke his foot in London performing a daredevil cross building jump for the new movie in the franchise – titled ‘Fallout’.
But he refused to follow specialists’ orders to keep a protective boot on and let the break heal for six months – or risk never being able to run again.
Instead Cruise was sprinting through the pain 12 weeks later – because he felt concerned about his cast and crew losing their wages.
The star said: “Obviously it was very, very painful and the doctors were concerned that I wasn’t going to be able to run again.
“It was a serious injury but I was like: ‘Look, I’ve got a movie, I’ve got a release date and my crew. I don’t want to lose my crew’.
“So I figured out how I would really rehab and train ten to 12 hours a day and I was back shooting in six weeks and I actually started running again in ten weeks and then sprinting in 12.
“All the sprints that the audience sees in the movie are actually on my broken foot.
“I still had the broken foot and I wasn’t able to do as many takes, but we figured out where I could do a limited amount. After I did it the first time, I couldn’t walk for three days.”
The action star spoke as he collected the Pioneer Of The Year Award at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
Smiling about his agonising comeback, he said he hated his healing boot.
Cruise said: “I took the thing off after a couple of days. I just couldn’t take it.”
Reflecting on the stunt, Cruise remains nonchalant about the dramatic break.
He added: “It happened. I’ve broken a few bones in my days and it happens.
It’s a desperate chase on my behalf, so it needed to be very ragged and it’s just one of those things.
“I just have a little more rehab and it’s doing much better. And now, not having the pressure of all the stunts that I have.”
