Avicii’s haunting lyrics on his own death leave fans moved after troubled Swedish DJ suddenly dies aged 28
The DJ had touched on how he wanted to be remembered when he died in a music video
FANS have been left moved by Avicii’s haunting lyrics on how the DJ wanted to be remembered written years before he died aged just 28 on Friday.
The Swedish DJ, who was found dead at a resort in Muscat, Oman, was well-known around the world for his electronic dance songs and performed sold-out concerts.
But since his sudden death, fans have been pointing out the words in his music has taken on a new meaning, including his most-known hit Wake Me Up.
The 2013 song includes the words “wish that I could stay forever this young” and “I can’t tell where the journey will end, but I know where to start.”
As well as the title lyrics: “Wake me up when it’s all over.”
Harrowingly, in the music video for his track “The Nights”, Avicii – who had battled a drink problem – can be heard speaking his thoughts on his own death.
He says: “When I was 16, my father said, ‘You can do anything you want with your life, you just have to be willing to work hard to get it.’
“That’s when I decided when I die, I want to be remembered for the life I live, not the money I make.”
One fan named Rob wrote on Twitter: “Listening to Avicii – Wake Me Up. Utterly haunting the lyrics. RIP Avicii”.
Another user said: “Avicii lyrics take on such a different, ominous meaning now. So sad.”
Others pointed out the chilling lyrics in Mike Posner’s single, which includes the lyrics: “I took a pill in Ibiza, to show Avicii I was cool.”
The song was reportedly based off Posner’s true story at an Avicii concert in Ibiza.
Blake tweeted: “wow that lyric is haunting now.”
Writing out the full lyrics, another Twitter user stated that it “might be one of the most haunting song lyrics now”.
The Grammy-nominated DJ’s publicist confirmed Avicii – real name Tim Bergling – had died, adding that his family were “devastated”.
No more details about the death were provided but tributes have poured from the music world, including pals Calvin Harris and David Guetta.
Avicii built a strong musical and personal friendship with Nile Rodgers, who described Avicii his “little brother” as he paid tribute.
He said: “I’m shocked because I don’t know medically what happened, but I can just say as a person, as a friend, and more importantly, as a musician, Tim was one of the greatest, natural melody writers I’ve ever worked with, and I’ve worked with some of the most brilliant musicians on this planet.”
Avicii had in the past suffered acute pancreatitis, in part due to excessive drinking.
After having his gallbladder and appendix removed in 2014, he cancelled a series of shows in attempt to recover.
Avicii told The Hollywood Reporter in 2016: “It’s been a very crazy journey. I started producing when I was 16.
“I started touring when I was 18. From that point on, I just jumped into 100 percent.
“When I look back on my life, I think: whoa, did I do that? It was the best time of my life in a sense.
“It came with a price – a lot of stress a lot of anxiety for me – but it was the best journey of my life.”
Rodgers said his last performance with Avicii about three years ago upset him because of Avicii’s drinking.
He said: “It was a little bit sad to me because he had promised me he would stop drinking, and when I saw him he was drunk that night.
“And I was like, ‘Whoa. Dude. C’mon. What are you doing? What’s going on? You said that that was done.
“We did a show and I was a little upset. I didn’t even stick around for his performance because it was breaking my heart. But we still had a great time. It was wonderful we were that close.”
Last year, Avicii posted this message on his website, promising to keep creating: “The next stage will be all about my love of making music to you guys. It is the beginning of something new.”
Sweden’s Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia , who knew Avicii from playing at their wedding, said they were saddened by his death.
