Winton, 62, passed away at his home yesterday and the news sent the showbiz world into mourning.

We can now reveal that the Supermarket Sweep host, who spent years battling depression, was moved by a sweet encounter with a fan who gave him a much-needed boost.

Talking to The Sun's TV mag he said: "The nicest thing that happened to me with a fan was last summer when I was in London and I was having a really bad day.

"I do suffer with depression, as my mother did. I was in this restaurant, the Spaghetti House, with a friend of mine, looking like a bag of s****.

"There was a woman sitting at the table behind and she heard me talking.

"She was this beautiful black woman. She looked like Diana Ross.

"She got up and said to me: ‘I do apologise for interrupting you...

"But may I say I absolutely adore you and hearing your voice has given me such a joy'."
