Russell Crowe set to make millions as his divorce auction gets underway
The Hollywood actor is flogging his gear following break up with wife Danielle Spencer
RUSSELL Crowe is set to make millions from his highly-publicised divorce auction.
The Hollywood actor has decided to sell off vast amounts of belongings, including a jockstrap and a dinosaur skull he bought from Leonardo DiCaprio while drunk, following his divorce from Danielle Spencer.
Onlookers said Russell, who turned 54 today, was in a good mood as as he made a brief appearance on stage at the Sotheby's auction in Australia today.
Before introducing lot 31, he took to the stage and said: "G'day folks, how you doing? You having a bit of fun?"
The auction was then briefly stopped when a woman sung happy birthday to the Hollywood star.
Besides being his birthday, today's event, called Russell Crowe: The Art of Divorce Auction, is also the anniversary of his wedding to former wife, Danielle.
He revealed he is flogging his gear as a "cathartic way to end the relationship".
Before he turned up at the auction, items already sold included a breastplate from blockbuster Gladiator selling for £68,000, a replica Roman chariot for £35,000, and a robe that he wore in Cinderella Man for £10,000.
The auction, which features the sale of movie memorabilia, Australian art, musical instruments, jewellery and cars, is expected to net Russell anywhere between $2.6 and $3.7million - which is around £2million.
Russell has been promoting his auction all week, which included an interview on Good Morning Britain, which was branded “painful” by viewers.
While he talked and talked about walls of cricket, music and film items, GMB host Kate Kate Garraway was more interested in learning about the jockstrap he was selling.
He explained to her: “It was my jockstrap when I won the Heavyweight Championship as the character James J Braddock in the film Cinderella Man. I put it in to the collection as a gag and funnily enough it’s attracting a lot of attention and it’s one of the most popular items!”
Russell's chat was being broadcast from Sydney so there was a bit of a delay, however that didn’t excuse how boring and overly long viewers found the feature, which even cut to an ad break part way through.
