But after months of build up, some viewers were disappointed Pat wasn't caught and dragged through the courts for his crimes.

Taking to Twitter, one wrote: "Wish #phelan would have paid for his crimes but still a fantastic episode. Brilliant acting from @Sue_Cleaver @connor9mcintyre #Corrie #FridayPhelan @itvcorrie."

Another tweeted: "@itvcorrie I was really wanting #Phelan to go to prison not die in the water #NeedtorememberitsNotReal" while a third added: "Anyone else find Phelan's exit/comeuppance very disappointing after everything he's done".

A fellow soap fan tweeted how Phelan's storyline could have been taken even further, writing: "Outstanding @connor9mcintyre but missed opportunities the trial, manipulating from prison, an escape."

Meanwhile another angry viewer wrote: "I hate it when they don't get proper justice, he needs to be punished not killed off! Disappointed."

However hundreds of fans praised the episode, which saw Phelan admit to murdering Andy Carver, Vinny Ashford and Luke Britton, as well as watching Eileen's former love Michael Rodwell die without calling for help.

In fact, many of them loved the ending, as they were convinced that without a dead body being found, it left the door open for Phelan to return in the future.

One wrote: "HE'S NOT DEAD!!! Unless they show a body then this isn't over."

Another added: "With today being Good Friday will #Phelan rise again on Sunday? #CoronationStreet".

A third tweeted:"#Eileen showing emotion & stomping on #Phelan's hands. Much more believable! #Corrie. Falling in the sea means no body. He can come back #HaroldBishop".

“If we don't see the body, that means he isn't dead!!!!” said a fourth.

Meanwhile the ordeal isn't over for Eileen, as she will be arrested for murder in Monday's episode.

However it isn't the death of her husband she is handcuffed for, but Andy and Vinny's murder.
