It comes after Lily, 28, - best known for her role playing Lady Rose in Downton Abbey - sparked speculation the couple were engaged when she wore a diamond on her ring finger at the BAFTA Awards last month.

Matt revealed: “I am thinking about kids quite a lot - I’d like a lot of them! A lot of my friends have children and, dare I say, I think I would be quite a good dad.

“I guess in the fantasied version of my life I have a big family and loads of dogs. But who knows what type of dad you’ll ever going to be.”

Speaking about his own childhood, Matt - who recently played Prince Phillip in Netflix’s hit series The Crown - revealed that he suffered from a debilitating stammer.

Matt was announced in 2009 to take over from David Tennant to become the Eleventh Doctor in the BBC sci-fi series.

He has now heaped praise on producers opting to cast the first female Doctor Who ahead of Jodie Whittaker appearing as the Thirteenth Doctor later this year.

While speaking to Kirsty Young on Radio Four’s Desert Island Discs he said: “I think it’s a brilliant choice because I think that show relies on big, broad creative brush strokes.

“And when it is controversial it’s sort of alive.

"If it’s too safe and same that’s not what he is inherently and he’s such a brilliant part.

"I think it’s high time and I think she will be sensational.

“I gave her the same advice as I gave Peter, which a crazy Texan director gave me after my first play at The Royal Court.

"He looked and me and was like, ‘Hey Matt, listen to no one’.

"And that’s what I pass on to people.”
