Who is Guillermo del Toro?

Guillermo del Toro was born in Guadalajara in 1964.

He was raised by his grandmother and as a teenager developed a keen interest in film.

Guillermo was trained in make-up and effects by Dick Smith who worked on The Exorcist (1963).

For ten years he worked as a make-up supervisor and formed his own company Necropia in the 1980s.

During this time he also taught film and directed and produced some Mexican TV programmes.

Guillermo is currently based in Los Angeles and Toronto.

What films has Guillermo del Toro directed?

Guillermo got his first break in film when he directed Cronos in 1993 which won nine academy awards in Mexico as well as the International Critics Week prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

He directed his first Hollywood film, Mimic in 1997 - a horror about super cockroaches threatening to wipe out mankind.

Guillermo is probably best known for his 2002 comic book inspired blockbuster Hellboy starring Ron Perlman.

His creepy dark fantasy Pan's Labyrinth (2006) also gained international success despite being a Spanish film.

In 2015 he co-produced and wrote the gothic romance Crimson Peak which grossed $74 million at the box office.

Guillermo also helped to produce more mainstream films such as Kung Fu Panda 2 and Puss in Boots.

He was initially hired by Peter Jackson to direct The Hobbit films but left due to production problems.

Who is Guillermo del Toro's wife Lorenza Newton?

Guillermo del Toro married Lorenza Newton in 1986.

The couple have two daughters, Mariana and Marisa.

Lorenza is a film art director and veterinarian.

She met Guillermo when they were studying together at the Guadalajara School of Sciences in Mexico.

What is The Shape of Water about and what Oscars was it nominated for?

The Shape of Water (2017) is Guillermo del Toro's latest work -  a fantasy romance about a mute woman who falls in love with a fish man.

Set in 1962, it follows the story of Elisa (Sally Hawkins), a cleaner who works in a top secret government laboratory in Baltimore.

Unexpectedly she falls in love with a highly classified scaly subject whose fate lies in the hands of the state and a marine biologist.

The Shape of Water was nominated in the Best Picture Award category at the Oscars 2018.

It competed with war drama Dunkirk starring Harry Styles and coming of age tale Lady Bird, nominated in the same category.
