Born on 31 July 1940, the veteran Northern Irish TV personality rose to fame when he won the ITV talent show New Faces in 1977, receiving the highest mark ever given to a comedian.
Roy is most famous for hosting the game show Catchphrase, which he fronted from 1986 to 1999.
During this time, he became one of the highest paid stars on television.
Roy famously coined his own catchphrases during his time on the show, with "Say what you see" and "It's good, but it's not right" standing the test of time.
