Who are Richard and Harriet on Married at First Sight?

Richard and Harriet decided to appear on the show because they were worried they’d never find the loves of their lives.

Richard struggled to settle down because he worked anti-social hours as a police sergeant, while financial adviser Harriet had been single for five years because she was too busy with work.

Harriet said: “After five years on my own I do worry about finding the person I’m going to be with. I look at my friends settling down and I just think ‘Why haven’t I got that yet? And when is it going to happen?'”

Meanwhile, Richard had five serious relationships and signed up to a dozen dating websites, but had no luck finding the right woman to settle down with.

He said: “We work strange hours, we work evenings and weekends and it does have an impact on relationships but I’m definitely a romantic. The sort of love I’m looking for is the sunshine, the rainbows, the kind of skipping down the street at the end of the movie.”

As the name suggests, Married At First Sight sees two complete strangers meet for the first time on their wedding day.

Experts select compatible couples from a list of applicants, then invite them to marry on their first meeting.

A hair-strand test, which measures cortisol levels, or stress – an indicator of how people react to difficult situations – hormone tests and interviews about personality, likes and dislikes, are used to decide who will work well as a team.

Thousands of people applied to take part in the new season, and it takes a year of form-filling and tests for contestants to go from applying to exchanging rings.

The singles are also faced with having to persuade their friends and family that marrying a stranger is not a completely ludicrous idea.

Harriet and Richard tied the knot at a plush London hotel.

After the ceremony, the newlyweds were given their first few moments together as a couple.

Harriet admitted she was pleased with her new husband.

She said: “He seems really lovely and kind… I have a really good feeling about it.”

Richard added: “First impressions are really good she’s really traditionally pretty, and she’s really nice, she’s got great sense of humour.”

Are Richard and Harriet still together?

Unfortunately, Richard and Harriet revealed they had decided to divorce at the culmination of the series.

The couple came to realise they didn’t have anything in common and decided to walk away from their brief marriage after Harriet decided the relationship wouldn’t work without chemistry.

However, police officer Richard admitted he was downcast by the decision and said he would have liked to give it longer.

He said: “It feels so rubbish to kind of not make your wife feel that way. I think deflated just hits the nail on the head.”

Harriet admitted she felt bad about the way things had worked out and became tearful at what had gone on.

However, there could be light at the end of the tunnel for Richard – who was bombarded with date offers from viewers after the episode aired.

They headed to Twitter to declare that the policeman won’t be short of a companionship following his appearance on the series.

One wrote: “Really want to marry Richard #MarriedAtFirstSight.”

Another tweeted: “If Harriet doesn’t want Richard. Send him my way! #channel4 #MarriedAtFirstSight.”

A third wrote: “Richard loves Lego and has a dog… and handcuffs… I volunteer. #marriedatfirstsight.”
