Richard, 75, who played the titular detective in the 1971 original, is the on-screen uncle of Samuel, 69, who played John Shaft II in the 2000 sequel.

Now the mantle has been passed down to Jessie, 25, who as Samuel’s on-screen son assumes the role of NYPD detective.
