Judi Dench slaps down campaign for female 007 backed by Theresa May

National treasure and Oscar-winning actress who plays M in the franchise has said that James Bond 'should be a man'

DAME Judi Dench has shot down a campaign backed by Theresa May for a female actress to play James Bond.

The Oscar winner, 83, has featured in eight 007 movies playing M, the Head of MI6.

But she believes the super spy, currently played by Daniel Craig, should always be played by a man.

Asked if she would like to see female James Bond, she said: “Not much, no. I think it should be a man. But who knows.”

Last December the Prime Minster urged Bond bosses to consider making the change after praising Jodie Whittaker’s casting as Doctor Who.

She said: “I think this is a great move forward for girl power that there is going to be female Doctor Who, and one day there should be a female James Bond.”
