His puppeteer Michael Winsor said: “It’s top secret at the moment. We are doing pop-ups to surprise Mel and Sue.

“We did one episode and he was such a success we ended up doing four.”

Basil — catchphrase Boom Boom — had his own BBC show from 1968 until 1980. He returned with current puppeteer Michael in 2002, for five years on kids’ channel CBBC.

He guested in 1973 on the long-running Generation Game — famous for its conveyor belt of prizes — with first host Bruce Forsyth.

Michael, who has signed with a top agent, now hopes for more prime bookings.

He said: “They want us back on Saturday nights.

“We want to get the family together watching again. We’re fed up with BGT and Pointless.”
