Coronation Street spoilers: Brookside legend Louis Emerick joins cast as Liz McDonald’s new boyfriend

The actor, 54, is most famous for playing Mick Johnson in the now defunct Channel 4 soap for more than a decade

BROOKSIDE legend Louis Emerick has joined the cast of Coronation Street.

The actor, 54, is most famous for playing Mick Johnson in the now defunct Channel 4 soap for more than a decade, but now he's swapping the close for the cobbles.

He will play one of Steve McDonald's former school teachers and he'll take more than a shine to Steve's mum Liz.

A source told the Mirror: "Louis' character Mike is not someone Steve is pleased to see again after years apart, and it gets worst when he develops a crush on Liz.

The idea of one of his old teachers trying to date his mum is awful for him but it leads some amusing scenes on the cobbles.

“Louis is very excited about playing the role. He will be on set from next week and can’t wait to get started.”

The actor has signed a deal to appear on the cobbles for a short stint, but the newspaper claims it could be extended if he is a hit with fans.

Taxi driver Mick was an instant hit on Brookside, with millions tuning in for Louis' stint on the show between 1989 to 2001.

More recently he appeared in Last of the Summer Wine and had a role on ITV comedy Benidorm.

Louis has also had a thriving stage career starring in a touring production of The Full Monty.

But eagle-eyed Corrie fans of a certain age may remember him from his first stint on the cobbles.

In 1986 he had a small speaking part in a brief scene with Jack Duckworth.
